The Sour Test with Chris and Lorraine

We wanted to make the interviewing experience funner (I know, I know, not a real word but made up words are funner. Angie’s cringing off camera right now), so Jan and I created a game inspired by one of our favourite Youtube series, Hot Ones. For obvious copyright reasons, we opted to stay away from hot foods and chicken wings. We thought of things that can increase in flavour or sensation incrementally, and though it took us a while, we landed on sour candies. The word “sour” itself sparks a visceral reaction — you might even be salivating right now!

A tasting menu that no one wanted

The sourness or tartness of the candy comes from citric acid, an additive you can find in dried mangos (my favourite), canned tomatoes, and pretty much anything that comes in a box or tin. It acts as a preservative. Side note: Jan and I are on Paleo, so don’t tell Paleo-ers! Citric acid is clearly not paleo-friendly, but I’m already giving up cab sauv, Roselle, and Ferreros — If I give up my dried mangos, what’s there to live for? Back to sour candy.

We tried the full range of Squish’s sour candy line, from vegan sour strawberry belts to vegan extreme sours, then sour peaches, and sour Mike and Ikes. We wanted to try others, but sadly, they were hard to find. Like, where can we get our hands on Altoids Apple Sours or Sweetarts Extreme Sour Chewy? Do you know? Please help us!

 




The game rules

We were able to find five candies that really did the trick. The game is quite simple: there are five pieces of increasingly sour candies in front of the couple, and if the pair’s answers don’t match, they eat the candy. The twist? If their answers match, Jan and I eat the candy. All I have to say is: You’re welcome.
